Every day, millions of people scroll social media and see the same thing:
A slick video.
A dramatic headline.
A product that promises to solve a problem we’ve all experienced.
That happened to me recently when I saw an ad for Ryoko Pro, a portable Wi-Fi device marketed as a way to stay connected anywhere. The ad was compelling. It looked futuristic. It sounded revolutionary.
But before pulling out my credit card, I did what every investor, entrepreneur, and informed consumer should do:
I researched it.
And that’s where the story gets interesting.
The Internet Has Made Marketing Better Than Ever
The problem isn’t that Ryoko Pro is necessarily fake.
The problem is that modern marketing is so good that it often creates expectations that reality can’t match.
After digging into reviews, Reddit discussions, and technical explanations, a clear picture emerged:
Ryoko Pro is essentially a portable 4G LTE hotspot. It connects to existing cellular networks and creates a Wi-Fi signal for your devices. It is not a new internet network. It is not a satellite network. It is not unlimited free internet. It is a hotspot.
That’s not necessarily bad.
But it is very different from what many people assume when they first see the advertisements.
The Real Lesson Isn’t About Ryoko
The real lesson is about how we make decisions.
Too many people see an ad and immediately ask:
“How do I buy this?”
Very few stop and ask:
“How does this actually work?”
Those are completely different questions.
The first question makes you a consumer.
The second question makes you an investigator.
Ryoko vs Starbucks vs Starlink
Once you understand what Ryoko actually is, the comparison becomes much easier.
Starbucks Wi-Fi
For most people sitting in a coffee shop, Starbucks Wi-Fi is likely just as fast—or faster—for everyday activities like browsing, email, Zoom calls, and watching YouTube.
The downside?
You have to be at Starbucks.
Fiber Internet
If you have access to fiber internet at home, there is a very good chance it will outperform Ryoko.
Fiber offers:
- Higher speeds
- Lower latency
- Better reliability
- Lower cost per gigabyte
For urban and suburban users, fiber is still the gold standard.
Starlink
This is where things become interesting.
Starlink isn’t competing with Starbucks.
Starlink isn’t competing with fiber.
Starlink is competing with having no internet at all.
If you’re:
- On a ranch
- At a construction site
- Traveling in an RV
- Evaluating rural property
- Boating offshore
- Living beyond the reach of fiber
Starlink solves a problem that traditional internet providers often can’t. Many users specifically choose Starlink because cellular coverage and traditional internet options are unavailable where they travel or work.
That is a completely different value proposition than a cellular hotspot.
Why Research Matters
The internet rewards attention.
Advertisers know this.
That’s why the best ads don’t sell products.
They sell emotions.
They sell:
- Freedom
- Convenience
- Security
- Wealth
- Status
- Simplicity
The ad isn’t really saying:
“Buy this hotspot.”
It’s saying:
“Imagine never worrying about internet access again.”
Those are very different messages.
The Investor’s Mindset
One of the greatest skills an investor can develop is learning to separate:
Marketing
from
Mechanics
Marketing tells you what something claims to do.
Mechanics tell you how it actually works.
Whether you’re evaluating:
- A stock
- A cryptocurrency
- A real estate deal
- An AI startup
- A portable Wi-Fi device
The process is the same.
Slow down.
Ask questions.
Read reviews.
Look for competing products.
Understand the underlying technology.
Then make a decision.
Final Thoughts
Ryoko Pro may be perfectly useful for some travelers who want a simple portable hotspot and understand its limitations. Even many balanced reviews conclude that its main advantage is convenience, not revolutionary technology.
But the bigger takeaway has nothing to do with Ryoko.
The next time you see a flashy ad promising to change your life, don’t ask:
“How fast can I buy this?”
Ask:
“How does this actually work?”
That single habit will save you money, help you make better decisions, and put you ahead of the vast majority of consumers.
In a world full of advertising, skepticism isn’t cynicism.
It’s due diligence.
